Location Ft. Sam Houston, TX
Square Footage 30,140 SF
The complete renewal of the 30,140sf multi-use Troop Medical Clinic (TMC) at Ft. Sam Houston was required to provide a modern facility that employed state-of-the-art technology and enhanced functionality. The design solution focused on flexibility, flow and growth, concern for life-cycle costs, sustainability, enhanced efficiency and functionality, departmental relationships, code compliance and aesthetic appeal. As part of the enhanced functionality, the TMC was designed around the Group Home model of healthcare, which greatly improved staffing effieciencies and the level of patient care. Departments within the TMC include Troop Medicine, Troop Readiness, Optometry, Immunization, Audiology, Behavioral Health, Pharmacy, Radiology, and Laboratory.
The interior public spaces were designed to address the fluctuation of patient demand the facility witnesses throughout the day, with peak levels in the early morning. The reorganization of the interior functions also allowed the creation of additional offices and exam rooms to meet future staffing and operability needs, all while maintaining the existing skylight locations. Sustainable design concepts were incorporated early in the design process, addressing the need for improved thermal barriers within the building envelope. The focused attention on thermal infiltration and energy efficiency allowed the project to achieve LEED Silver Certification.
